[General]: The ticking 2.4
Howdy Y'all! I have a 2005 Caravan SE, base model, with the 4 speed auto. It's got a touch over 126,000 on it, and it has an odd ticking that I can't seem to identify. Quick background - bought it used with 122,000, didn't tick for about 3 weeks, then started for a couple days, then stopped. Decided to change the oil (who knows what the PO really did?) and couldn't get the drain plug out (stripped and wedged in). Ordered a new oil pan and changed the oil when I replaced it. I put 4+ quarts of 5-30 synthetic and a bottle of Lucas Oil Treatment in. It did the clicking thing a couple times. Drove about 1000 miles and changed the oil and filter again, just to be safe. It did the clicking thing 1 time, and then did not make a noise for over 2500 miles. I had to change the evap control valve thing, and about a week after that, it started clicking again.
The clicking is Quite Loud, and sounds bad, when it's doing it. It doesn't do it when it starts, even if it's only been shut off for 5 minutes and is still warm, and it doesn't consistently do it when driven. It quiets down when you accelerate, and gets louder when you lift off, but again - only when it's actually ticking/clicking. I grabbed my mechanics stethoscope and I could not hear anything like the ticking when I placed it on multiple spots on the cam covers. I also didn't hear the clicking when I placed it on the upper part of the head or the lower part of the block, right above the oil pan. It runs fine, no warning lights, and I'm still getting between 20-22 MPG. My first thought was lifters, but it seems like I'd hear that with the stethoscope on the cam covers. Oh - if it sits and idles for about 2 minutes the clicking/ticking will slowly diminish until it's gone, and it doesn't come back unless you drive it a bit.
I would think a rod knock or a piston slap would not be intermittent, but I'm an old air cooled VW & British sports car guy, so maybe these engines have their own quirks?
I'm just looking for some ideas on where to look, and hoping someone/anyone has had a similar experience.
Thanks!
Eric
