[3rd Gen : 96-00]: code p0300 and p0171
Hi,
I have a '96 grand caravan with the 3.8 v6. The van currently has 63,000 miles on it. I've recently replaced the cam position sensor, as well as the down stream O2 sensor. While on a 3 1/2 hour road trip, the van began to stumble, and lose all power. This went on for about two miles, than cleared up. I week later, while driving 3 1/2 hours back home, it did the same, and even stalled out. It acted up much worse the second time. Both times, it happened during the last half hour of my drive. During the week, driving only 20 or 30 miles, it's perfectly fine, so I'm guessing that something is becoming heat soaked. One other thing. The fuel pump sending unit likes to act up quite a bit. The codes I got, are p0300, and p0171. Can someone help me with this. Thank you. I've only owned the van for 3 months, so i don't know the maintenance history.

I know this is an old thread, but I have a 1997 Grand Caravan 3.3L V6, and I also had a P0171 code back in July 2005, when the van had about 73K miles on it.
Turned out to be a bad fuel pump in my case.
I had driven back from Calif. to AZ through hot desert at about 122* F day, and without stopping to refuel, so the tank was pretty low and I suspect the
fuel pump overheated and damaged it. Barely made it home, the van was very low on power.
Fuel pressure was low, as seen by putting a pressure gauge on the fuel rail (schrader valve) and seeing only 25-35 PSI instead of 49PSI or more per spec.
Needless to say, I don't drive that trip anymore without stopping mid-way in Yuma to put more gas in.
