[4th Gen : 01-07]: Engine rattles only in drive and between 1-3 RPM, increases with acceleration
2001 Dodge Caravan SE, 3.3. I cannot figure this out as it only makes the noise in drive while accelerating and only between 1 and 3 RPM's. Does sound like it's coming from the belt side of the engine. This past summer, I did have some intermittent A/C issues. Could it be the clutch or the compressor? Maybe the Alternator pulley? I appreciate any and all advice or opinions. Thanks.
Remove the serpentine belt. Start the engine, shift to drive, and do a brake stand up to 3k RPM to see if you hear the noise. This shouldn’t take long so don’t do it for more than a minute - expect to see warnings on the dash.
If the noise is still there, it’s not related to the belt or accessories.
If it’s gone, it’s one of the accessories or tensioner/idler pulleys. Spin each one individually and rock back and for to check for play. They should all spin freely without noise except the power steering pump and water pump. The power steering and water pumps won’t spin freely but they shouldn’t feel “rough” as they turn either. It’s normal for there to be end play (in and out) on the power steering pump but it shouldn’t rock. The water pump shouldn’t have any play at all.
Check the fluid levels for the power steering, coolant and transmission.
