[5th Gen : 08+]: Cracked flywheel terrible noise
So after much searching for a loud rattle in my 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan my neighbour and I figured out the terrible intermittent noise. I have a cracked flywheel that is rattling in low idle. Has anyone changed the flywheel in their van and if so any videos or diagrams or advice would be much appreciated.
You should get by with a basic set of tools but I’d suggest a 3/8 long handle flex ratchet for getting into more confined areas. You’ll also need a torque wrench and pry bar, as well as a hoist for removing the transmission from the engine bay. Be prepared for needing a tap and die set as well in case you need to chase/repair threads.
Getting a service manual (Chilton, Haynes, etc) will provide a step by step process for replacement as well as have photos, diagrams and torque specifications.
This is a fairly advanced repair procedure. It’s possible to DIY but if you’re inexperienced or uncomfortable with auto repair then I’d advise getting a friend/relative who’s capable of helping you. You’re gonna need an extra set of hands to remove/install the transmission anyway. If that’s not possible, go to a shop - yes it will be more expensive but you’ll save yourself the time and hassle and won’t be personally responsible if something goes wrong.
