[5th Gen : 08+]: What's a normal shift in drive feel/sound like. 2014
2014 Dodge Grand Carvan. Wondering if i should feel a "thump" and sometimes even hear an audible "thump" sound when shifting into drive. Most of time when going from reverse to drive. It worries me because most of the time it's buttery smooth. Cause for concern?
Yes it is normal. I don't know how loud this thump you hear is but when you shift from P to D you have a hydraulic fluid being pumped at a very high pressure up against all the slack in all the gears between that hydraulic pump and the tires sitting on the pavement held in place by the brakes.
If however you were coasting and shifted from N to P and heard a thump then I would gather something is wrong. Perhaps an engine/transmission mount that is worn out, or clutches not doing their jobs. But if those were and issue you could visually see the engine/transmission flop over real far with the hood lifted and shifting into D (with the brakes on). If the clutches weren't doing their job fast enough your engine RPM's would sink for longer than 0.01 seconds or so after you shifted to D while the brakes are on.
