Grand Caravan 2009 3.3L Stalling/Smoking Mystery - With Videos & Pics
Van had been running fine and then it developed a burning wire type smell after driving I noticed a few times. Opened the hood and couldn't trace the smell and all looked fine. Then ran fine for a week until wife took it for a longer drive and phone me to say smoke was coming out from under the hood. She said it went away after stopping for a few minutes and it ran fine for a week again (but sometimes going up hills would be low on power and making a clanking sound). Then wife calls again and says smoke was coming from under hood and it won't start. I go to get her and pick up van which won't start, turns over fine but stutters and won't fire up every time. Look under the hood and all looks good, can't trace the source of burning/smoke. Had it towed home to work on it, problem must be tied into the burning and smoke but can't locate it on this 3.3L 2009 Grand Caravan.
Video of the issue (smoke is greyish/bluish and hangs in the air after unlike white smoke you would see from a headgasket failure, no overheating ever, no coolant loss, oil is fine and doesn't drop, no cel codes. Has had a slight metallic rattling noise on startup for a few months only when engine is cold and has been sitting, usually overnight, lasts just a split second and sounds like small ball bearings rattling faintly, read this was normal on a Dodge 3.3). Looked far and wide on the Internet and have found no one with a similar issue. Hopefully someone has experience the same issue and can chime in.
Parts changed/items checked :
Spark plugs
Ignition module/coil
Spark plug wires
Crankshaft sensor
Throttle body
PCV valve good
EGR valve not stuck
Changed all fuel injectors and fuel injector harness
Fuel pressure checked and is good
Compression 190psi across all 6 cylinders
Pulled the pre cat o2 Sensor after trying to start the engine - it was coated in oil, no gas smell just oil smell. Pulled spark plugs and no oil on them and just the normal slight bit of gas on them. Van leaks smoke out the exhaust manifold to flex pipe connection before cat on first try starting the vehicle and then on further attempts to start comes out there and the tailpipe in a large amount. Van will only run about 2 seconds before starting and if I give it gas it will run a second or 2 more before stalling.
Changed the ECT (Engine Coolant Temp sensor), no change in the start/grey smoke/stall problem. Will look into the TIPM next and maybe change the Camshaft sensor (although no codes for that so maybe not).
This may be one issue that no one can figure out, never seen the problem come up with similar symptoms after many hours of searching the internet. Real head scratcher.
