[3rd Gen : 96-00]: 1997 Grand Caravan Stalls Without Warning While Driving
Our 1997 Grand Caravan 3.3L has 394k miles on it and runs great except the engine occasionally stalls/quits without warning for no reason. It shows no faults or error codes afterwards. It just simply dies and keeps rolling down the road without power steering or brakes. If we slip it into neutral it starts right back up with no problem and the stall may not happen again for a long time. The stalling can be a hazard as we live in the mountains of Western North Carolina and our roads are curvy and some people ride our tail and aren't expecting a vehicle to slow suddenly without brake lights first warning them. The only common factor is it happens mostly when starting up a slight incline. Our local mechanic is great and has full diagnostic scanners but says unless there is a fault code or reading, he can't pinpoint the issue. He says a bad fuel pump would show up in his diagnostics. I was told recently by a family member who had a similar issue that it could be the alternator going bad and dropping voltage just briefly so the computer shuts off. The only way to detect it is for the event to happen while connected to diagnostic equipment, which happened with his vehicle. I'm open to everyone's expertise here. Thanks.
