I have a 2001 Grand Caravan and recently found out that the rear heater core hoses have eroded away and ruptured. They are Steel! WTF. What dumb *** though of that??

 

I don't know, but I bet that dumb *** is making a lot more money than you! If it makes you feel better the new replacements from Mopar are aluminum and last much longer. Besides, they have been steel since the early 90's.
