Tranny stuck in 3rd
I have a 2000 caravan 3.3 that has about 66K on it. Today I noticed the engine light on. Shortly after that I the van doesn't want to shift out of 3rd. I checked the codes but I got the 999 and nothing else. After that I limped home and checked the fluids, ok. I put it back in gear and now it stalls out in drive. No smell of burning tranny fluid and it has good color.
Where do I go from here and please don't say the Stealer.
Thanks

Remove one of the battery cables for about fifteen minutes then reconnect and try it out.If the newer vans are like my 92,you're in the dreaded "limp home" mode. This is a situation where the transmission stays in one gear, usually second, until the code is erased or reset.
The stalling in drive could be several things but it could be the lock-up torque convertor isn't unlocking. There are several sensors that could be at fault.Input and output speed sensors can be failing, causing the problem you have.A reputable transmission shop can read the codes and probably tell you how it can be fixed.
Avoid the national chain shops, they usually are nothing more than remove and replace shops. This means they remove your old transmission and replace it with a rebuilt unit off the shelf. That's fine if you need a whole new transmission but if the trouble is something small why pay for an entire rebuild?
This is a common problem so keep us posted about how you resolve this situation.

I removed the battery cable and that seemed to change somethings. The check engine light went out and so I figured I take er for a spin. Well that seemed to have fix the problem, the tranny is shifting through all the gears fine. I even took it on the highway to make sure it was ok. Then less than mile from home the tranny is no longer engaged. Finally as my speed dropped it kicked in then the check engine light came back on. I'm no mechanic by any means but that seems to point to some sort of sensor I would believe. Please point me in the right direction if you can. Thanks
My neighbors son is a Chrysler mech. for 15yrs. or so. He put his reader on it and got a P0700 and more important a P0755. It seems to be pointing to the solenoid cluster. It's costing me $200 for a reconditioned one. I was hoping to find a procedure. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
Sorry I can't help on this one.I can really only give advice about things I've worked on myself. It looks like you might be buying a solenoid cluster, although speed sensors can do this same thing in my wife's van anyway (92).
