Speed sensor
I have a 1999 dodge grand caravan, 3.o liter engine, 4 speed automatic transmission. I need to replace my speed sensor. only problem is my chilton book does not show there location. ( i understand the 4 speed tranny has 2 sensors). thanks for the help.
If your tranny is the 41TE, then it looks like both sensors are mounted on top of the transaxle housing, underneath the resonator/air cleaner cases. The output sensor (I guess the one you want?) is closer to the drivers' side, prob. underneath the fuse panel; the input turbine speed sensor is mounted in between the tranny cooler lines, closer to the passenger side, but still on the top.
I don't have any experience with the transmission but the Haynes manual has a detailed photo of the top of the housing. I've heard bad things about the Chilton book; I can't say that the Haynes manual is a whole lot better but it's been a decent guide for doing my 120Kmi service, as long as you aren't too dependent on following its (mis)instructions to the letter. I think they just try to cover too many engine/model year combinations in a tiny little book.
Despite saying that, I'd still probably recommend getting one since the factory manual (wholesale) still runs you over $100 USD. It's been worth the $15 or so I paid for it.
