Alternator Clutch?
I have an 01 Grand Caravan and the alternator seems to continue rotating about a couple turns after the engine is shut off. the pulley is not turning just the internals of the alternator and the bolt that is in the pulley. it looks as if there is a clutch between that bolt and the pulley. This problem just started when I shut the car off and I could hear a wierd sound for a second after the engine stopped. I have been driving it for about 3 weeks since I first heard this. has anyone heard of this. or know anything about chrysler alternators?
Thanks
Thanks
There is an overrunning clutch on the nose of the alternator that has gone bad. You can buy just the clutch from the dealer for around $40 or $50. You have to take the alternator off of the van to replace it.
Onmy 2001 DC with 100K miles the alternatorclutch began slipping and making some serious noise with the engine running. Iboughtjust the clutchbut was unable to remove the clutch from the alternator without a special tool. Went toa dealer and had them try to remove the clutch with their special tool. They broke the tool.Went to anotherDodge dealer service department where the one of the lead techs said they never try to remove that clutch, they alwaysreplace the entirealternator/clutch assembly. I proceeded to do that to solve the problem. It's a shame to have to replace the whole assembly but I had no choice.
I am sorry to hear about you having to replace the entire alternator. I have replaced many of these with absolutely no problem. They are quite easy in fact. If you would like to read more about what this alternator pulley does, you can click on this link. http://www.tendeco.com/website/decou...ecouplers.html
the whole alternator definitely does not need to be replaced. you can get the pulley on ebay, www.americanenginesco.com, www.Iat-usa.com and more. You can find out more about the pulley and the reason for it at decouplerpulley.com. I believe gates make a tool for replacing the pulley. Hope this helps in the future
