Default E85 means 105+ octane

Hello,
Living here in Minnesota, we are awash with E85. There is a new plant coming up 30 miles from my house and we have gas stations all over that sell it. Anyone out there know what I have to do to run it in my Charger. I am going to stop at a GM dealer, because they sell flex fuel cars and maybe I can get some ideas (types of gas pump floats, lines, injectors, etc). I think it is the way to go. Sure it doesn't have the BTUs gasoline has, and may not be overall cheaper, but at 105 advertised (108 RON) just think of the possiblities!

I had some charts on the e85 crap that showed u burn more e85 mix inorder to get the same MPG as regular fuel. I dont know if u will ever have the chance to see this first hand I know I have because I have been in the advanced engine performance classes, but if u were to watch the adaptive fuel which should be around +- 7% with e85 U go +40% to mkae up for the lack of the e85 to get the correct 14.1 air fuel mix.
So u will spend more money on filling up your tank because your MPG will go down by15 to 25 %. SO do the math even if its 30 cents cheaper a gal u will still spend more on filing up because u will do it more often and still pump more of the green house gas everyone is all up in arms about.

Dodge Tech,
You are right about the loss in BTUs -- ie, having to burn more for the same result as gas. I don't think it's a 40% loss however -- the guys running it in their FFV say it's less but not a lot. The guys here says it's about 2-3 MPG less. There are race cars here using it for more octane and cleaner burning than gasoline and we don't give any money overseas. Since you are a Dodge Tech, I thought you might have data on how to convert over or a blend of E85/gasoline for Charger use. If you have any useful data on how to do those things, I'd appreciate it.

PS: If I have to spend a bit more to help OUR farmers, I'm in... and I say that with mystomach full.

I recently saw a news story out here in Colorado that said there is a company that does have a box that wires into the computer so that you can convert a car to run E85. They are waiting for EPA approval.

I had an 03 Yukon that was flex fuel. It was getting about 16mpg on regular unleaded and dropped to 11.7 with E85. Same driving style and route to and from work.

Just my 2 cents

Since alot of gas stations now are selling gas that is 15% ethanol can't they make 20% so gas would be like 10-15cents cheaper. Or maybe even 17-18%.

The problem with this whole thing, is the same problem we have with gasoline: taxes. Once the feds find a way to tax something, hang on. When E85 first came out here in MN, it was over a dollar cheaper than gas. Now, with the appropriate taxes, it's only 40 cents cheaper. With its less MPG, many people won't want to use it. One hand of the govt wants us independent from foreign oil, and we want to be, now they tax the hell out of it so we won't use it... go figure.

E85 is cleaner burning, supports our farmers, and is made in the USA.

If I could get SC to make a map for E85...

And in the winter, the stuff is thick as glue...

I will NEVER run E85 in ANY vehicle I EVER own...
