Default Race Fuel

Here's a couple of questions for the masses... There is a station by me that sells 98 and 100 octane VPrace fuel, would running this gas harm my engine or is it pretty harmless if used infrequently? Do you think I wouldneed to advance the spark when running that high of octane? I also wondered if using a can of octane boost wouldn't give me the same effect for a fraction of the cost of the race fuel.
The reason I ask this is because I remember that nitrous ate the engines up of theguys that ran it in their cars back in the 80's. I don't know if this still holds true but it sure appeared to cause the early demise of several sweet engines. -Rob
