Default Car making unidentified noise

So, I need some help here. My car is making a noise that my mechanic can not figure out, and I have been unable to catch a tech at the dealership to take a ride to hear it.

For the last several months, my car has been making a noise that sounds like an air compressor. It comes on at random times and always stops when he car goes below 20 mph. I have never heard it when going less than 20. At first I thought it had something to do with the air conditioning until I noticed it was doing it even if my air was not on. When it starts, I can feel it as it seems to draw some power away. So far, it isn't really hurting anything that I can tell, but the sound is really annoying and makes it sound like I am driving a diesel.

There really is no other way to describe this, so hopefully someone has an idea or has had this happen to them as well.

Hi Robert,

What model year and engine is your Charger? Have you tried making a firm appointment with your dealership to conduct a ride along?

Yeah. Guess I forgot to mention that. I have a 2010 Charger R/T, 5.7 Hemi. My local dealership runs on a "skeleton crew" (their words) on Saturday, which is the only day I can go in. I have tried to get there several times to be the first in line, but have not been able to. I've been able to do a ride-along before with a previous vehicle, but this time has proven to be very difficult.

I will say that my mechanic called the dealership and talked to someone there he knows and they could not give any answers on the information he provided.

I know sometimes it's a little difficult to try and diagnose over the phone--would you be able to drop the vehicle off on a weeknight for them to look at the vehicle during the next day?

Not at the moment. I was hoping it would sound familiar to someone so they could advise whether it is serious and I should MAKE time to do it. At the moment, it seems like only a noise as the car still runs fine.

Tough to diagnose a sound over the internet.
