check engine light

check engine light
I went to lunch yesterday and my check engine light came on. While the car was going through the start up cycle (when the check lights go off) I noticed the gas gauge went from half a tank (which was correct) to empty, stayed there for a second and went back to half a tank. Any ideas?

Get the code read. Any auto parts store will read it and buy yourself a code reader. They are crazy cheap these days <$20 and will pay for themselves the first time you use it to diagnose your own problems. The engine light being on is your car telling you what is wrong.

Sorry to hear about this! If you end up deciding to visit a certified dealership for further diagnosis I'd be happy to offer assistance if needed, just send us a PM with your VIN and let me know.
