What next???
I am getting a high pitched knock (sounds like a rocker knock) from my 07 dodge charger with the 3.5l. I have seen all the topics about the problems with the rocker assembly's, so I started there. Replaced both rocker assembly's, still had a lot of racket from top end so I replaced the passenger head since it seemed to be worse for wear in looks. That cleared up most of the noise but still had the one ping sound coming from top of motor (at least that is where I believe its coming from) on driver side. So I replaced that head. While replacing it, I noticed the on cylinder 6 there was 2 very small (like half the width of a pinky nail) marks on the piston that appeared to be valve marks, on the exhaust side. I checked the head and valves and sure enough there was the smallest (paper thin, about 5/32 of an inch wide) shiny spot on the 2 exhaust valves. The valves still moved and seated properly. The damage on the piston was only superficial (basically just enough to show through the carbon build up) no actual damage. So i replaced the head, got everything back together, oh and set timing at TDC with both cam gear marks perfectly aligned with their respective marks after tensioner was tightened. In other words timing is spot on. I get in and crank it over, and it started up right away. Its really never started as easy or quick as it does now. It runs as smooth as can be, no misses or backfires or anything. (no codes either btw) Just that annoying freaking knock that is still there. I am very limited on when and how I can work on my car because I live in some apartments that does not allow anyone to perform any type of work on vehicles, and they mean it. Just to do all of this i had to push it out into the street and do it there, so tearing into the bottom end is not something I want to have to do unless I have to. I am already thinking that after seeing the number 6 damage and the fact that the new head didnt change anything, maybe a broken wrist pin or spun or worn rod bearing with just enough play to allow it to tap the valves???? If so I dont want to risk it letting go and slamming the new heads and valves by starting it up for people to hear and give me their shade tree advice. I can mess **** up good enough on my own. So with that just looking for some opinions or thoughts to kinda verify to myself what I am already thinking, or maybe I am missing something and somebody knows the miracle fix to save me.... (other than selling the damn thing lol) Thank you all in advance. Trying not to give up on my dodge, but .......
