Default gap distance for the spark plugs

hi there everyone wondering if you guys might now what the gap is on plugs im gonna be beefing up the electrical system with motoblue wires and ngk plugs.the wires are to bring more spark to the plug .opnions on maybe lengthing to get a longer spark or keep the same and get a hotter spark ? any ideas

You could probably save yourself a lot of time and money. Instead of replacing what is already an excellent system, why not do what the racers do, and index your sparkplugs. You will see a much larger performance increase, than replacing the existing system with an aftermarket system. It is doubtful that the combination of indexing and adding the new plugs and wires would be of any greater benefit. So save your money, and increase your performance.

{information on how to index plugs was deliberately omitted to increase curiosity, and let someone with a better knowledge of the head flow characteristics decide what the proper index is for each of the plugs}

Depends on what you do. Normally it will produce a higher energy spark, you may also need a higher voltage coil. If you gap too wide it will not jump the gap. If the spark energy is too high it will seek out an easier path leading to spark leaks. Be careful if you go into this realm one misfire is all it takes to ruin all the fun.

SO WHATS THE INDEXING DO EXACTLY AND WHATS THE STOCK GAP.

Lining up in order the direction of the spark of the plugs. With two per cylinder you could face them in opposite directions to get the max. I forget what “they†(whoever they are) recommend.

You purchase extra plugs and mark/test fit each one in order to get them to line up. Then return the plugs that don’t fit the direction needed.

<edit> didn't explain why... it's to get the best position of the plug within each cylinder for optimal spark.

.045 gap (if you go w platinum plugs don't gap em)

Indexing puts the Side Electrode for the sparkplug in the optimum rotational position to optimize airflow within the combustion chamber across it. If you take a marker and mark along the side of the spark plug where "arm" comes off of the spark plug. Lining up the arms to the proper rotational position to optimize the combustion gasses across it in the cylinder. They make some ultrathin washers that assist in maximizing the position. The washers come in 1/8 turn and 1/4 turn.

Sometimes experimentation is required to find the optimum rotational position, and it can vary from cylinder to cylinder depenmding on the intake layout.

Indexing was discovered in racing where cars were of the same type, with the same engine and modification were not allowed. They discovered that there was enough of a difference by indexing to win the races. As a result it was a closely guarded secret for years.

This is what the Wikipedia says:

A matter of some debate is the "indexing" of plugs upon installation, usually only for high performance or racing applications; this involves installing them so that the open area of the spark gap, not shrouded by the ground electrode, faces the center of the combustion chamber, towards the intake valve, rather than the wall. Many experts believe that this will maximize the exposure of the fuel-air mixture to the spark, and therefore result in better ignition; others, however, believe that this is useful only to keep the ground electrode out of the way of the piston in ultra-high-compression engines if clearance is insufficient. In any event, this is accomplished by marking the location of the gap on the outside of the plug, installing it, and noting the direction in which the mark faces; then the plug is removed and additional washers are added so as to change the orientation of the tightened plug. This must be done individually for each plug, as the orientation of the gap with respect to the threads of the shell is random.
