after market electronic ignition
I mentioned my recent problem with my 1966 Dart (6 Cyl). I was wondering if someone outhere know what aftermarket electronic ignition can i use to replace the points system. Need some kind of bolt on, pull the old ignitioin out and put the new electronic one in. Thanks
I think Pertronix makes modules for your year Dodge Dart to replace the points/condensor and maybe complete ignition system replacements. But the goal with those systems is to avoid having to routinely replace the points as part of regular maintenacnce. You obviously have a more serious problem that needs to be solved. I suspect if you put the Petronix unit in you would still fry your coil.
I was thinking of a whole new system from and earlier model Dodge Aspen 6 Cyl electronic ignition and wire it independently not using the original power source. These old cars seem to have wiring problems, specially this one that as i go thru things, I keep finding wires jumped from one line to another, I am just trying to decypher the wire harness itself. Thanks for your reply. Have a nice day.
I suspect you could wire in an electronic ignition module from an early Aspen/Volare if you really wanted to but the wiring on that is more complex than the wiring on the points/consenor version. I think you would also have to change the distributor. I think the newer distributor with the magnetic sensor in place of points would fit in your engine, but I never tried it. Also the distributor advance curve might not quite match your year engine.
Which engine do you have 6 170 0r 6 225 or 8 273? Do you have the wiring diagram from the factory service manual. The wiring for the igintion is really very simple on your car - about as basic as you can get. You or any competent mechanic with basic electrical skills should be able to trace out the circuit in your car and fix it or rewire it. Make sure ballast resistor is not somehow bypassed during normal operation (after initial start). Make sure that the specification on your replacement coil matches the original.

Same difference. A reluctance system is a magnetic system. See link below for some different types of alternative ignition systems.
