Hello so I’m looking into buying a 1978 dodge w300 but I’m trying to figure some things out about it what I know is, it’s a 1978 dodge w300 conventional cab it has a 318-1 series motor with a 4 speed manual trans and it has a custom 300 badge on the side I’m not sure of the wheel base but it has a tank on the back of it it used to be used for a driveway company but something I’m confused about is that it’s a 1 ton truck but has single rear wheel axle and also I forgot to mention it has a plow attachment on the front I don’t know if that’s factory or not thanks

 

Does it have a standard bed or utility bed or what? Pics would help. Depending on what bed you could get single or duel wheels.

 

A lot of 1 ton trucks, especially Dodges were built as SRW, or single rear wheel. There are a lot of companies that build snow plow rigs so it's probably an aftermarket.

There should be a plate in the drivers door that will give you information on it. Usually on the door but sometimes on the door frame. You can also use the VIN converter here in the "tools" section. Your truck was probably sold as a chassis cab, but Dodge has always been pretty good about selling a truck ready to work when it leaves the lot.

Might want to clean off the vegetation before taking pics. It looks like a custom installation, What are your plans for it? There where some trucks with a factory plow, Look in the engine compartment and see if it has a pump for the plow hydraulics. I don't see any lines going to the cylinder so it may be removed.

 

My plan for it would be to just restore the whole thing and find a regular bed for it and just daily it

 

In the short term, I think I'd lose the tank, especially if it will unbolt from the bed, and drive it like that. You might be able to sell the tank to defray the cost of the refurbishing. I would absolutely NOT use a torch on it though as if it had petroleum products in it, you might get blown into the next county. You may find a company that can use an extra bed mounted tank. If not, there's always scrap metal, although an intact tank is more valuable. (Yes, I'm chea...er...thrifty.)
While a 1 ton is fairly heavy for a daily, I used a 2500 with the 8800 pound chassis for one for a while. Get some medium aggressive tread tires on it and if you get a heavy snow, you'll be going when others aren't. I think if the base bed on your truck is flat, it would actually be pretty neat. It's got locking tool boxes on it so you can store your stuff and leave the cab open.
