how to identify my transmission?
I've got a 1993 Dakota 3.9L with a automatic transmission, long box, regular cab. The transmission is starting to give me problems. When it is cold it goes into gear o.k-when I accel. then back off the gas then reapply the gas it acts like it is in neutral-revs up then jumps into gear. It will do this a few times at first(first and second gear).Once it warms up this problem stops but the on going problem is the erractic shifting from 2 to 3. some times it shift normal and sometimes it hangs in 2 then at high rpms shifts in 3 then into overdrive. Oil level is fine and I recently changed the oil, installed new filter. Got the oil from Dodge-ATF+3. Probably first time changed in trucks history(200,000 kms).

Getting back to my question-How do I determine the type of auto trans. that is is installed in the truck?

It has a 42RH. Check your fluid level, sounds like its low. Make sure you check it idle in neutral on level ground. The fluid level should be in the middle of the crosshatch, NOT the top or the bottom, in the middle.
