Default Need Help with Diagnosis-RPM surging and dropping

Hello All,

I am new to your forum so let me say I appreciate any help you can give me.

I have a 2000 Quad Cab with the 4.7L(77K) about 2 months ago it started acting up, if I was sitting at a stop light the RPM would surge up to 800 and then drop to 300 and "repeat". The truck tried to surge froward everytime the RPM shot up. It did this intermitantly, then I started noticing it would do it at highway speeds from say 2000 to 2600 and then drop again. Drove it this way for a couple weeks and the Check engine light came on, Dealer said the "computer" had 7 fault codes but I needed a new PCM computer and they recommended a throttle body cleaning and tune up. They did all this and a month later its doing it again. Starts slow and gets worse just like last time, took it to the dealor now they say I need a new throttle body... Atleast thats what the "computer" says. Has anyone ever experienced this, or does anyone have an idea if they might be right? I'm afraid we are going to keep replacing whatever part the "computer" says till we get lucky.

Thanks,
Larry

Sounds like the Throttle Position Sensor. I know of the 5.2s and 5.9s having that problem.I think on the 5.2 it was under the air cleaner box. It may be located on the Left Hand side of the Throttle Body.. Not positive on location. Hope this helps.

I had the same problem with my 4.7 L 5 speed manual. It would surge up to even 2000 RPM and back down to around 700 when I wasn't driving and when I was driving at low speeds it would buck. I tried using fuel injector cleaner and completly cleaned the throttle body and got no results. I changed the throttle body sensor ($46 @ parts store and < 10 min. to change) last night and the problem was instantly solved. You do however also have to reset the PCM once you have the sensor installed. To do this unplug the + battery terminal, turn the key to "On" for 30 sec., reconnect the battery terminal and start the engine.
