Default Rusted out oil pan

I got underneath my 2001 Dakota to change the oil. It's a 4.7l 4x4 with 62K Miles. I noticed some oil drips a little bit away from the drain plug. I went to wipe them off and found out that the pan had started rusting through. If I had poked a little harder with my finger, I would have gone clear through! Good thing it didn't open up on the road.

So, word to the wise - get under there and check out your oil pan. This is not a cheap or easy repair, especially on a 4x4. You must replace the pan - don't try to plug the hold with epoxy or anything. And don't get the bright idea (like I had for a minute) of draining the oil and then welding the hole. You and your truck are going up in flames for sure.

Lucky I've got a great independent shop here. Took it in without an appointment and had it back to me the next day.
