The easiest way I found is to remove the negative battery cable for a few minutes. If you have a local Autozone, they can do it for free with a ODB reader.

what is an ODB reader? I have the same problem on my 1996 Dakota V-6. Check engine light came on about 2 months ago, then went off after a few days. Now it is back on again. Bought some Valvoline gas additive and drove it about 5 miles, where it is now parked. I will detach the negative from the battery to see if this works. Ok, it worked. I disconnected the negative for about 5 min. and while I was doing it I cleaned the crud off the terminal, needed it.</P>

I had the same problem with one of our 2001's (v6). Ended up being a small pine hole in the evap. system (for the fuel).
Please note: This truck ended up having 2 motors put in it.
