My father in law has an 03 3.9 dakota that is hard starting and has gas in the oil even after an oil change. There are no codes and nothing showed up when he took it to a local garage to have them hook it up to a diagnostic scanner. Where should i start looking fuel pressure regulator? injectors? computer? any hep would be much apreciated

 

How many miles on it?
When was the last time it was tuned up(plugs, cap, rotor, airfilter, throttle body cleaned)? if theidle air port on the Throttle Body is dirty it can run rough at idle and could lead to hard or no start
If its like the old 5.2 and has alot of miles a good tune up won't hurt and isa cheap investment


a small amount of fuel in the oil usually burns off when warmed so if you have a lot of it you may have leaking injector(S) that are letting out fuel after sitting.
another option is that it needs one or more of the items for the tune up and because its not getting the right mixture or a good spark you are slightly flooding it on start.

 

I am thinking with a hard starting vehicle you have just flooded it a few too many times trying to start it that is where the fuel in your oil came from. Check your plugs, if you don't know when the last time they were changed best to change them. Also make sure you GAP the plugs according to the info on the emissions sticker under the hood, never trust that plugs are pregaped I always check.Check your Air filter if it is clogged no air no fire. Seen a ton of trucks that guys say suck gas like mad and smoke black, and start hardthat had mud in the filter or a wet filter. Plug wires check the condition and make sure there is no corrosion on the terminals. Cap and Rotor never hurts to replace especially if they never have been changed. A professional injector cleaning might be in order as well they can be pricey as they are not the throw in the tank type, they use a high grade solvent to clean the injectors to like new. Cheaper then replacing just one injector in most cases. Check the ground for your Coil(s) if it is corroded clean it up. Hope this helps.
