Default Any ideas whats wrong with my tranny/cutch?

i have a 2000 dakota 3.9l 5spd and yesterday i drove to the store and all was fine. i come out and try to drive away and it wouldnt go into gear. when i tried to put it in 1st, the truck would roll forwards and then roll back when i tried to go into reverse. so i finally jam it into gear and its very hard to shift. so i park it and then head out again and its totally fine...any ideas?

the truck has 68,000kms on it so i wasnt expecting this yet.

Not a mechanic (mechanical engineer), but hard shifting could be a bunch of things...here are my thoughts -

1) The clutch isn't fully disengaging when you push in the pedal, so they synchros have too much load on them to pull in and out of gear. I would think, though, if this were the case, if you managed to get it into 1st, the trans would grind and the truck would lurch as you manhandled it into gear.

2) One or more of the synchros are worn, broken, etc

3) The shift linkage is f-ed up, something got bent, shift fork is twisted...how does the shifter feel when things are good? Any excessive slop or crunchy feeling going from gear to gear?

42,000 miles is awfully low for any wear-related issues, unless you're a clutch rider or do 4000 RPM launches at every stoplight. My hunch is #3...if the truck isn't grinding or bucking around when this happens.

One more dumb question, you did release your ebrake, yes? [8D]

under normal conditions it shifts easily with no problems except it wont go into 1st sometimes when i stop at a red light or something so i have to put it in 2nd then 1st.

when it wouldnt go into gear, there was no grinding or weird noises at all. wouldnt go into any gear and when i tried putting it into any gear the truck would move forwards or back.

one thing i have been noticing is when i put it in first when im stopped i can feel a slight pulse in the brake pedal when it goes into gear...

OK...here's a question...the clutch is in, and you're trying to force the sucker into 1st...are your RPM's fluctuating?

i honestly didnt even notice if they were going up or down as i was too flustered that my truck was broken (not working, horrible time to for money) all i noticed was rocking back and forth...
