Forum:

I am a little confused!

My ride is a 1998 Dodge Dakota R/T 5.9. I keep reading about "bolt-on" performance parts that will give me (so they claim) all kinds of increase in performance.

I am not a "Motor Head" but I do like a good performing ride. Here is my delima;

If I buy a throttle body spacer I can increase 10-30 HP(or is that %?) I need to add headers in order to get the 30 HP/% however. Okay, I'll get the headers too. Now I can by a new performance throttle body and get another 15-30 HP/%. I may as well get a modified fan for the radiator which will give me couple more HP/%. An Airaid intake sytem will give me more power and then I can add some to the ignition system for more spark thereby giving me more HP/%.

Wanting to leave my engine intact and use just bolt-on performance parts the above info leads me to believe that with a minimum amount of time, effort and $$$ I can increase my HP by 100%

Am I confused or what?

Well there is no way that with bolt on's alone that you'll double your current HP. But you will increase the HP by a noticeable amount and the truck will be faster and more efficient.

An exhaust system and intake manifold would also increase HP. To seriously double HP you'd be thinking, probably all add ons, plus camshaftand cylinders heads... turbo or supercharger... etc. Big time money...

What does everyone else think?

I hear throttle body spacers dont do jack, unless you have the fuel injection through the throttlebody itself. My 03 doesnt, so wont work for me.

As for 100% improvement? Maybe like Amanda said, including a supercharger. Thats pretty big bucks.

I love how these companies claim gains up to 20hp. Several times I have contacted these companies and asked for the dyno for my particular engine. I have yet to get one. I usually research sites like these to see if someone did a dyno themselves.

Thanks for your response. You are right. Actually I have the Mopar performance computer but all it does is change the shift points. I wish I could find someone with a Hyperchip????Computer so I can reset my computer. I can't justify $300 plus bucks for a one shot deal. I also have the Airaid intake system which I did realize an increase in prformance and mileage.

I talked with the guy that designed the throttle body that SoCal sells and he swears that it will give "Up To" a 30% increase at the crank and it will also give better throttle response.

Thanks again,

That is correct. The spacers are just as good as muffler bearings. They have a slight screw design on the inside that is supose to speed up the air flow or create better atomization. It may cause slightly better atomization on throttle body injection, but it does nothing otherwise. Spacers work great on carburated engines because it insulates the carburator and the fuel in it's bowls from the engines heat.

You can triple the engines horsepower with bolt-ons if you want to, but it won't last long. Your best bet is the usual bolt-ons, headers, exhaust, computer, ignition, cam, intake, etc. The largest gains are always the most expensive, turbo or superchargers. The cheap route is nitrous, but it's only there when the bottle is full and the others are always there at your right foot.

Once a programmer is used on one truck, it wont work on another. This keeps someone from buying a programmer and charging thier friends $50 to tune thier chips, thus cheating the company out of money. They can how ever "un-tune" the first truck then use it on another, but it will only work on 1 truck at a time.

I had a group buy on the Superchips programmer for $270 shipped. If you want one at the price, act right now and email me at jupi1_38@yahoo.com

Also take note, the programmers will not work if you dont have a stock PCM. If you have a Mopar modified chip, you would have to call superchips and see if they can support it, BEFORE you buy.

...all bolts-on i'm aware of free up horse power...like headers free up at most 10-15hp, larger intake tubing frees up 3hp, underdrivie pullies free up close to 5-7, mufflers free up to 3-5...it's the other hard labor, and like said by everyone else, the more expensive things that add hp...like porting and polishing you heads, SC or blower, heavier fuel injectors, larger TB, cam, ECU tuning...but you're also talkingquite noticable hp increases...

...to add onto the comments of '71ROADRUNNER', TB spacers do nothing but "pull" on you throttle cable, making it tighter (hence a quicker throttle response)...withfuel injection, the fuel is mixed with the air charge after the TB, specificlly, in the intake runners, so a TB spacer just makes for a longer trip the air has to make before it mixes with the fuel...with carb spacers, the air/fuel mix is at the carb,so a spacer adds pleneum to the intake manifold, making for more air/fuel charge...
<edited><editID>leifinator</editID><editDate>38016.8267361111</editDate></edited>

Captain Art,

How much money do you want to spend? If you want to double your horsepower, here is the place to spend your money. The sky is the limit: www.krcperformance.com
