31" tire question...
I have a 1999 Reg. Cab Dakota 4x4 and am trying to avoid getting a lift, but at the same time want that nice wide tire stance. So i was looking at 31x12.50 BFG M/T on black 15x10 Rock Crawler rims. My question is whether 12.50 are too wide without a lift. If they are, would a large offset help at all? minor trimming is alright, but i'd prefer not to do much, if any. Any help is GREATLY appreciated!!
I JUST MOUNTED 31X12.50 ON THE STOCK 15X8 RIM, THE WAS DURANGO STYLE M/T'S.
I HAVEN'T HAD A PROBLEM WITH THEM, NO RUBBING AT ALL. TOOK THE TRUCK OUT AND WENT WHEELN I HAD NO PROBLEM

Thanks a lot man, I really appreciate your reply. Is their any advantage to going with a 15x10 rim on a 12.5" wide tire over going with a 15x8 rim? Second of all, I'd like some suggestions on what offset on the rim to go with. I really want them to stick out a couple inches to get that mean stance. Thanks in advance.
THE 15X10 RIM SHOULD GIVE YOU THE STANCE YOUR LOOKING FOR BUT KEEP IN MIND THAT 12.5 TIRE WILL PROBABLY RUB A LITTLE. THE STANCE SHOULD BE A MEAN AGGRESSIVE ONE. YOU WILL BE ABLE IN THE MEAN TIME TO GET THE 12.5 ON THE 15X8 RIM WITH A LITTLE HELP.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry if these questions are stupid, but I'm 16 and not too experienced with this stuff. Are there any advantages/disadvantages with a 15x8 over a 15x10? Also, what could i do to stop the rubbing of the tires? I really dont want to lift it...not even a body lift. Thanks again.
I have 31x12.50 on my truck know with no rubbing, you could actually go with 33x12.50 with out rubbing as well. you could do all this with out a lift, some trucks might need the inner fender well cut out if the torsion bars are set at full. check the torsion bars first to see were your at with those. if there set at full you probably won't need to trim the front inner fender well. know the back will fit just fine with both size tires, as well as the front. any more questions i'll be around for awhile. i'm glad to help.
Do you have 15x10 or 15x8 wheels? Also, you said you have no rubbing at all...did you crank your torsion bars at all? or did you leave it as is from the factory? Is cranking the torsion bars bad for the truck? Thanks again man.

WELL, I HAVE THE 15X8 RIM, ACTUALLY THE FACTORY RIM SIZE IS A 15X8.5 YOUR 12.5 WILL FIT BUT WITH A LITTLE HELP. THE TORSION BAR SETUP IS A LITTLE DIFFICULT TO EXPLAIN. THE FACTORY SETTINGS WILL USUALLY BE SET AT FULL OR HALF WAY. TO SET THESE ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS TAKE A 3/4 SOCKET 1/2 DRIVE I THINK, AND CRANK DOWN THE BOLTS UNDERNEATH THE TRUCK WERE THE TORSION BARS MEET THE TRANS CROSS MEMBER. USUALLY MOST DAKOTA'S COME FROM THE FACTORY CRANK ALL THE WAY. IF THERE NOT CRANKED AND YOU WANT TO CRANK THEM YOU CAN, THE THING IS THAT YOUR QUALITY OF SUSPENSION RIDE WILL DECREASE. IT'S NOT BAD BUT WHEN YOU HIT A BUMP OR SOMETHING THE SUSPENSION IS NOT VERY FOR GIVING. YOU SAID THAT YOUR DIDN'T WANT TO PUT A LIFT ON YOUR TRUCK CAN I ASK WHY. THE REASON IS THAT I HAVE BEEN RESEACHING THE LIFT'S AND I FOUND A REALLY GOOD SETUP THAT WILL FIT UP TO 35'S ON A 15X10 RIM. IS ALSO DEPENDS ON HOW MUCH YOU WANT TO SPEND. IF YOU ONLY WANT TO GO WITH 33'S THERE'S ALSO A BODY LIFT. THESE BODY LIFT'S ARE NOT HARD FOR PERSONAL INSTALLATION JUST TIME CONSUMING. DID YOU JUST GET YOUR TRUCK OR HAVE YOU HAD IT ALONG TIME. YOU HAD ALSO SAID THAT YOUR SIXTEEN WELL THAT A PERFECT TIME TO GET INTO WHEELIN.
I dont want to get into any lift kits cuz the only thing i could afford would be a body kit and i'm not a big fan of just having a body kit, and no suspension lift. This Dakota is actually my 2nd vehicle...I had a 98 Wrangler with 31x10.5s on some 15x8 chrome rimz. Nice "street" look, but i want it this beast to look mean. Do you have any knowledge of 31x11.5 on a Dakota? would the 1" narrower tire eliminate all rubbing? I know if you get the off-road package it comes with 31x10.5s, and they would just be 1 inch wider. I found a nice tire/wheel package out of Off-Road magazine that was Super Swamper 31x11.5 LTBs on 15x8 black rock crawler rims. I know Super Swampers dont last more than 25k-30k miles, but they sure do look good. And by the time those are worn i could probably afford a lift and jump up to 33s. So i'm not looking for longevity, just a nice looking set-up. Thanks for all of your help!
i have heard that when you put the 33x12.50 on your truck you'll be fine. the only thing is that you will probbably have to trim the inner fender well just a little bit. I am not quit sure where to trim the fender well. My problem is that i have a 2000 quadcab 4x4 and for this style and model truck there is only one lift for it. that is the Rancho 3" lift for rack and pinion steering. the body lift is real cheap, it cost about $197.00 for the kit. your tire situation is a question of wether or not you want to spend the money there is a really good site about dak @ dakotausa.com check out for pic's.
