Default Please help out a Jeep guy.

Hi all, i dont have a Dakota but i have a question for you all. I own a '93 Jeep Wrangler and am going to be putting a 318 into it, because it only has a 2.5L in it now i am going to have to up grade the diff's to handle the motor. Could some of you with different year's of dakota's give me some specs and messurements from your front and rear diff's so i know what will be the closest to the size I need. I have asked my Jeep guys but it seems everyone likes to put ford and chev parts in their Jeeps and i would rather stay as much MOPAR as possible, and since you guys run dakotas you are the best people to ask.

I'd rather push my mopar than ride in your Ford!

304 was used in jeeps in the late 70's Basically the same block as the 318/360 I believe - you dodge guys correct me if I'm wrong.

You do know you will have to change engine, trans, & transfer too - just find a junk truck & take the entire unit.

Axels will need to be purchased or built. You can get the D44 from the Rubicon - will have to change the perches but should be the correct width.

What kind of measurements do you need? block width etc? I don't have a 318, but a 4.7

I don't know that the 304 is the same block. Never heard that.

The LA blocks and the Magnum blocks have the same mount locations. As far as motors, I would suggest you get any 318 from years 1993 and up, those will be magnum engines, more power than the LAs.

Not exactly sure what you mean measurements and specs for the diffs? You will need to match your driveshafts to the new engine and tranny. You wouldn't be able to use ours. Check out allpar.com for the magnum engine specs.

The Dana 44 and Dana 60 should work for you with a drivers side drop. We run an IFS which you probably don't want, and you can get the trucks with an 8.25 or 9.25 inch rear axle. The gearing is usually 3.55 stock. or you can get them with 3.92 and 4.10 I believe.

95_318SLT is currently doing a solid axle swap to his Dakota in the first gen forum, he has a 318 in it now. Might be worth the read for you. Also, lots of good info in the FAQ in the first gen that you should find useful.
