Default charging problem 91 3.9L V6 dakota help please

Okay, I've got a 91 Dakota and it will not charge the battery. I took the alternator to AutoZone and had it tested, it seemed fine, it made 16volts. Then I read on a forum that sometimes the computer voltage regulator goes bad on the dodges, so I tried an external voltage regulator, still nothing, tried a new alternator, new batter still nothing. tonight I went as far as to completly isolate the alternator and battery, I hooked up my wireing harness to a different battery, and hooked up my alternator to a battery all by itself, it still wouldn't charge even if I energized the field on the alternator! I'm at a loss here, any ideas? Thanks,
