Default timing chain problem

I just changed out the timing chain and gears in my 93 dakota 3.9 v6 magnum, and when I cranked it it didnt want to Idle. if you run the rpm's up it seems to run fine. and the check engine light is on now also. I disconected the battery to see if the comp. would reset itself, but there was no difference. will it correct itself if I drive it? I didnt have a timing light to check it but it fired right up and will run if you keep the rpm's up. or is there something I'm overlooking? if you have any ideas let me know. thanks
