Default 1992 Dakota 4wd Oil filter issues...

I was recently "given" a '92 Dakota that needs a little TLC.

I was driving it home and found that there was an oil leak. When I got home and had it up on ramps, I found out that that leak was comming from the filter itself. I got the filter unscrewed, but I can't get it out of the area where Dodge in all of its infinite wisdom decided to mount it.

I can't get it to come out either through the top through he engine compartment or the bottom. There is just not enohg clearance. I would just crush it and take it out but I wouldnt be able to get a new one it o replace it.

So my question is this.... how?

I was wondering if maybe a half filter would be more appropriate?

Thanks for the help....

What enigine is in this truck? before i wrecked mine I had a 318 v8 in mine with plenty of room to work on all the parts. I also checked my haynes manual, and the filters in all the avilible engines looked accessible.

Seeing as how your post is two months old, hopefully you've solved your problem, but if not, here's how I get my filter in and out. I have a '92, 318, 4X4. Once the old filter is unscrewed, I let it drain for a while, then lift it up, forward, and out by passing it between the exhaust header and the frame rail/engine mount bracket.

I was on a long trip a while back and decided to drop into one of those quickie oil change places, and after 25 minutes of watching through the window while the crew tried to get the filter out, they finally let me in to show them how. Stymied me for some time the first time I changed it's oil way back in Jan '92.

Hope that helps!
