I am new to these forums and my 99 Dakota 5.2 4x4 has acted up a couple of times on me in the past few months. I was driving around at a pretty low speed and stopped at a stop sign and my truck just died. I started it back up and went along and it happened again while driving. This happened 4 or 5 times within 10 minutes and hasn't happened like that since. Two weeks ago, I drove to the store (short drive), came back out and my truck wouldn't start at all UNLESS I held my foot on the gas, in which it would stay running, unless I took my foot off of the gas. It was an interesting drive home. Couple of hours later the truck started just fine and stayed running. That hasn't happened since either (yet). I don't get a check engine light with either of the conditions mentioned. Any ideas? I do a lot of exploring away from the city and would rather not be stranded up in the Sawtooth wilderness with my dead truck because something was going out.

I do however have the same problem that many are having with their abs light & brake light staying on accompanied by the speedometer not working until 25-30 mph. I plan on picking up a Rear Speed (RABS) Sensor tomorrow and fixing that (hopefully).

Also, has anyone else had a problem with their headlights intermitently shutting off (parking lights stay on) or shutting off when switching from high to low beam or vice versa. Flicking the high/low beam switch remedies this, but its not fun when driving at night. I was planning on replacing the multifunction switch (wipers, high/low beam, turn signal switch), but was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions or had seen this problem.

 

About the fuel, mine did the same, i thought it was the fuel pump failing, but when i took it to the mechanic they said it was working fine, but the EFI system was very dirty and thats what cause the problem. and all the sensors where ok too.

And for the electrical system, no i have not gotten any problem.

I think a computer check might tell you something. Would be nice that the check engine light was on at that time.

Changing air filter often help keep EFI clean and running. Spark plugs to, they have to be change also regularly.

 

Thanks for the info DarkHamlet. I know my air filter is clean. I have a K&N and that was the first thing I checked. I might need to change out my sparkplugs, I will have to pull them and have a look. Any other suggestions on how to keep my EFI clean?

I fixed my Speedometer/ABS/Brake Light problem tonight by replacing the Rear Speed Sensor. Like a 10 min job with a 1/2' Socket. $35 for the Sensor.

 

Keeping the Air Filter, always in excellent condition, and add Aditives to clean Injectors, it helps also.

Try not to let the fuel tank run on reserved because it will take into EFI, impurities and will clug the
Injectors & oder parts.

If you have a metal fuel tank, switch to plastic because it prevents rust from forming and getting in EFI system .
