Default 98 Dakota popping out of 1st gear on take off

First of all I want to say hi to everyone, I just found this forum and this is my first post

Ok, now to my question as stated in my subject. I'm having trouble with my truck, when I attempt to let in the clutch and take off in 1st gear it's randomly popping out into neutral and making a grind noise. This is new to me as it started happening yesterday. I'm certainly no expert when it comes to working on vehicles, but I'm assuming there's something wrong with my transmission.

Does anyone know what may be the problem?

Thanks!
Darren

Hey, It sounds like the syncro broke on 1st gear. Do you rember it popping out the first time after shifting and the gear wasn't fully engaged? First isnt too bad since you only have to hold the shifter inplace a short time. No easy fix other than tearing whole trans apart.

Only problem with that is the carnage that can occur due to the tranny pumping fluids around if there are chunks of metal broken off.

+1 horatio! if you have broken components floating around in your trans, it is only a matter of time before they wedge their way into another functioning part of your tranny and you lose second gear, or fourth, ect.
