Default Heater core/dash removal

Ok guys and gals,

I've searched all I can search in this forum and I can't find anything regarding removal of the dashboard of a 1990 dodge daytona to get to the leaking heater core. Actually, I found some threads, but there were no clear instructions of pictures - which is what I was after.

Anyway, I'm going to give it a shot. I've got a Chilton manual for this car and when I read the directions for heater core removal I was discouraged as there were very few instructions and they clearly stated I would have to remove the dashboard, steering wheel and console. Damn. My confidence grew when after looking through the Chilton a little closer, there were directions on dashboard removal in the interior section, I believe it was section 10. I saw what looked to be some decent instructions as well as some pics. So, I'm going to give it a shot. My mechanic skills are minimal. But I will try to post the pics of my progress along the way. I will also try to include pics but my forum account seems to be complaining that it's not fully active and I still have to wait for an activation email.

It's a 1990 Daytona 2.5, auto, air, no power on anything but the mirrors. My grandmother bought it brand new and I never really cared for it because I thought it was greatly underpowered. She put my name on the title in case anything happened to her it would easily go to me, so I'm partially first owner of the car. As time goes on, I keep getting more and more comments regarding the car - it seems to be growing on me. The parts are widely available, fairly easy to remove and install, and they are cheap. I have ran the engine out of water and oil ( the engine takes 4 qts of oil, and I put 4 qts of oil in the car before the level reached max on the stick!!! I know, I'm lame) and it still seems to be running strong. I am currently on the fence with my feelings on whether to keep the vehicle or not. For now, I will attempt the heater core removal and see where it goes from there.

Wish me luck and stay tuned for attached pics.

you might want to look at www.turbododge.com or www.turbo-mopar.com for more help on this. I can tell you the job you are attempting is a giant PITA. Take pictures as you go along and keep track of where everything goes as it comes apart. I did one in a wrecking yard and it took forever.

Hi Marty Mopar,

Your link to turbododge had a post in a thread that really helped me out with this. Everyone was right when they say it's a major pita, but this post has some good notes and pics to work with. Not sure if I could've gotten this with just the chilton.

Now it's running rough and throwing a 51 code, so more troubleshooting. Hoping it's just fuel since it's been sitting for over a month. But I gunked out the engine while I did all this so I could have messed up a sensor or egr valve. Getting ready to check fuel treatment, fuel filter, MAP and O2 sensors as well as the catalytic converter itself. Ran fine while checking the heater core swap - got it hot twice to check for leaks etc... Got it all buttoned up and ready to take it for a sping and it began running rough. I will try to insert a link to the infor I'm speaking about above.

Thanks again,
Phil
