Factory Alpine system help
I have the 09 Ram with the factory Alpine system upgrade.
I'm looking to replace the system with an aftermarket nav, but am wondering if i should replace the factory alpine amp, or not.
does anyone have a wiring diagram, or know where the amp is physically located and how big it is?
I know there is a peripheral unit that will give full integration, but it seems like the only feature that it really gives you is to turn on the amp....seems like a lot of money for just the one feature...
any insight in all of this would be appreciated

You are going to have to wait on that wiring diagram unless you have connections with a dealer. They won't be available to the public until at least 6 months to a year after the vehicle is released. Check with the dealer in your area to see if they will allow you to order one.
I'm guessing that the amp is located behind the dash. I have had my center console open and I didn't see anything there, and there's nothing behind the seats either. I would not be surprised if the sub woofer in the back powers all of the speakers in the truck.

neo117,
I don't know if they are set up the same but I had a 2001 Ram with the Alpine system and the amp was located by the passanger side front speaker. It actually had a bracket built around the speaker magnet. If you are looking for an after market system go to Crutchfield.com. They are very good with diagrams and wire conversion kits. You can even type in your exact vehicle and the site will tell you which units are compatable with your current system. Hope this helps. PS I haven't checked on the 2009's yet to see if the have those in their system. I also just bought a 2009 Ram but I am going to wait till the sirius subscription runs out before I look to change anything. Good Luck! cazbo3313
I am sorry neo117, I was mistaken about the Alpine system. I think I had the Infinity System in my 2001 Ram. I appologize for the mistake. I still suggest Crutchfield.com for more info.

ok, here is what i found out, and i will try to stay in the order of those who have replied already:
smooth, i was going to check the subwoofer....maybe i still will....
Minarets, the system sounds OK, but not GREAT - for what they are charging, you are much better off getting the lowest systems and just upgrading yourself - there is actually a whole thread on this in this forum, with a variety of opinions on it, including my own.
Cazbo, I checked crutchfield, and they do not even show an aftermarket adapter available. they state that the sterring wheel controls will be lost, the harness will have to be cut and spliced by hand, and that the head unit will have to be wired directly to each speaker with new wires run! whew, glad that isn't necessary!
bigred, i looked into the adapter, and it does 2 things i want: turn the amp on, and integrate the steering wheel controls, and a few things that i am not sure i really need, such as illumination output, parking break and reverse sense and VSS control...but that being said, it may still be worth it for the steering wheel controls.
And i realize i don't NEED to swap the amp but i may WANT to :-)
Sobomaster - i saw the nav units on ebay for $600-$900 , but i think the AVIC-F900BT that i have is a little bit more versatile, and has more of the features i want.
I plan on doing the head unit first, and if i am not happy with the results then maybe the amp and sub next with the rest of the speakers being last....one step at a time :-D
