Both of the Hemi's in my garage are already hybrids. They burn gasoline and rubber.

Yeah cause I bought the hemi for the gas mileage! The 390 HP and 407 Lb Ft of torque just happen to be perks!

If I am not mistaken the Durango got this in 09. So if you want to get an idea of costs tak a look at a D.

I just took another look at the Durango (been a few months). The Hybrid option is basically a 5K add.

Even if it were closer to 3K, is it really saving anything?

Hemi D is 13 and 18 (if you can believe the sticker)
Hemi D with the H is 20 and 22.

So lets say averages of 15 and 21, 6MPG difference.

15K miles a year.

Hemi D would be $2000 in gas (@ $2 a gallon)
Hemi D H would be $1430 in gas

That is $570 a year. Will take about 5 years to get your $$ back. Now, if gas prices go up you get a quicker ROI. But in 5 years what kind of maintenance cost will you be running into with this system? How long will these batteries maintain optimal levels?? How long do you plan on owning a truck, me, I usually do not make 5 years.

When they announced the Hybrid I thought to myself 2010 will be the year I buy. But after thinking it through, will it save me any money, and the fact there may never be a 2010 Ram I thought it may be best to buy now.

Well I am not keen on gm transmissions going into Dodge trucks. I think the 5 speed that has been around since 2000 is absolutely fine of go to the 7 speed. Hybrid Hemi how cool........sure the year after I get mine. What I am not pleased with is alll the changes that were made after Dec 08 for the 09 like the tail gate lock. Does anyone have an actual list of changes that were made that are now standard?

The hybrids, especially if its a plugin, would see the maximum benefit for city traffic economy wise. Idling that big engine at redlights and stop and go can really add up.

On the Ram specifically, I have noticed that the engine is not powerful enough to push such a large frame down the highway above about 60mph in 4-cylinder mode. With the assistance of the electrical motor, it could probably cruise a good 50 miles in four banger mode w/ electric assistance on the highway at speed before depleting the battery, which would REALLY give it a fuel economy boost for commuting if it were a plugin type. You'd still be paying for the electricity, but a full charge is remarkably cheap.

One of the other advantages is that hybrids have massive battery capacity and powerful electrical systems. This means that on trucks they can be adapted to run powertools. Just plug in your saw to a locked outlet on the bed of your truck. How cool is that? Or just run your accessories for a really long time w/ the engine off.

Who knows what they'll ACTUALLY incorporate, but a lot of potential there on hybrids even for our big trucks!

This sounds good..but I also wish they would consider putting electric motors with their diesel motors. Good luck to Dodge!
