Default Magnaflow muffler and MDS?

I am looking at getting a 09 crew cab 4x4 SLT Big Horn Hemi Ram. I am already thinking that I would like more out of the exhaust, if I make the trade. I have an 05 Hemi Ram now with a Magnaflow muffler with custom duals and love the way it sounds. I have read many threads and watched a few videos on youtube, but I still haven't learned much about how these mufflers will sound when the MDS kicks in. Not many of the videos show cruising speeds of 50 to 65 mph to understand how the MDS changes the sound of the truck. I am looking at the Magnaflow 14" or 18" muffler with everything else being the stock dual exhaust. My local muffler shop guy said he would leave it all stock for fear of how it would sound with the MDS, but I like to hear my truck. I don't care for it to be loud, I just want it to be a full and noticable sound with mininal drone. So, is the truck going to sound ok with the Magnaflow and MDS on? Thanks in advance for your opinions.

I have a 09 HEMI with duals and a Magnaflow/Mufflex 14. The sound overall is awesome. It'd probably be a tad loud for most, but after owning vehicles that ran glasspacks and Magnaflow 40s, the Mufflex 14 is a nice step down that will let you get the rumble you're looking for and still being able to hold a conversation.

The MDS however sounds like shi@t. You go from a V8 sound to sounding like a ricer with a big muffler on the back as it gurrgles. I did/do two things that really helps though. First, I run the truck in 5th around the surface streets of town. So, if I'm just going up to the grocery store, I'll shift to 5th to kill the MDS from ever coming on. It seems like MDS at the slow speeds really is the worst of the sounds.

For highway speeds I let the MDS kick in. It doesn't sound that bad at that point and you'll lose most of the gurgle just from the highway speed cabin noise. Turn on the radio and the noise is almost gone. The only problem area was around the 1700RPM cruising speed (3.55 rear end gears). The truck picked up a MDS drone that wasn't bad, but was noticeable. However, just recently (3 weeks ago) I had the resonators replaced with just pipe. Now that's done, the MDS drone is almost gone completely. Replacing the resonators didn't change the overall sound of the truck, so it didn't get louder or quieter, but since the sound no longer has the resonator materials to bounce around in, the sound shoots out the back and you loose the in-cab drone.

I hope this helps and make sure to post up some pics as soon as you get your new ride.

I like what MDS does for the truck, just my opinion. It roars when u give it gas, and mellows down when u coast.

I don't think I want to disable the MDS, so thats not an option for me. Thanks War Horse for the good discription. I wonder if the 18" would be better sounding when the MDS kicks in compared to what you said about the 14". I also wonder if the core size of the muffler makes a difference? As far as the 18" goes p/n 12278 has a 3" core, where the one my guy has to install is 12258 and it only has a 2.5" core. Will that change the sound? Anyone else have any opinions on this?

Thanks for the video. That doesn't sound too bad. Is that the 14" on your truck?

I installed the magnaflow, exhaust systme part number 16870, cat back with dual, both the original muffler and resinator are gone.

Sound is good, mufflers are far enough back they don't bother you in cab at highway speeds not noticable.

When the MDS kicks in you notice the sound gets deeper but still sounds good, not like the chevy's. I have noticed the MDS kicks in up to 70 now and when going down hill on the interstate.

I have the 09, SLT, 4X4, crew cab w/ram box, 5.7 hemi with 3.92 axles.

I installed a magnaflow 18", but I have the single exhaust and left the stock resignator. You can read the whole process here https://dodgeforum.com/forum/4th-gen...-question.html I have owned 3 rams, having flowmaster delta 50s to straight pipes....mustangs with flowpaths, etc, etc, you get the picture. My most recent install of the 18" magnaflow has not disappointed me in the least. I would consider it the best "all around muffler" for this application that gives a very nice tone that is still controlable depending on the driver's mood....tame when you want it to be and ***** out when you step on it. In my opinion, the best of both worlds, and that is INCLUDING the sound that it gives off during the MDS sessions. I could hear it kick in with the stock muffler, and can hear it more now, but it is not "annoying", "bothersome", etc. I can, however, see how this could be seriously amplified with a different setup. Having been a longtime fan of Flowmasters over the past 14 years, I can honestly say that IMO, magnaflow at least on this platform is the way to go.
