Default Winter Tires / 245 70 17

Hey guys,

I have an 09 Laramie and I bought some factory 17" steelies. I am looking into buying 245 70 17 winter tires for them. Does anyone run this setup? Are they too small? I know the smallest tire that these trucks come with are 265 70 17. I'm thinking about the 245s cause they will grip better in the snow/ice due to their narrower profile and they're cheaper. I know my speedo will be off by 7% and I'm ok with that. I'm just looking for input whether this is ok or if they're too small, thanks folks.

What is that saying...If the shoe fits wear it....
I am looking for rims right now. Found a guy on craigslist with a set....
But they are 20". So should not be a problem for me. I would have gone with 18". 17" might look small on a 4x4. But heck if it is only for winter snows....

Anyone know if 5 lug 20" rims off a 2004 1500 will fit the '09's?

What is the width of the 17" rims? I would just call a tire place and ask if the 245 would fit on what ever width rim you have.

They are 7" wide. I looked online and the 3rd gens came with 245s stock from the factory. So i guess I should be ok...

Default not much of a difference

a 265 70R17 is 31.6" tall and the perimeter = 99.29"
a 245 70R17 is 30.5" tall and the perimeter = 95.83"

(99.29 - 95.83) / 99.29 = 3.49%

At 70 MPH your speedo will read 70 x 1.0349 = 72.44 MPH

Thanks for the info. The difference is negligible and in that case, I'll order the tires.

Why such skinny tires? Your truck is a 4x4 with lsd, you'll be just fine with any size tire.

That is what I was thinking. I would be more worried that the tire would hold the weight of the truck in extreme situation's. It's like putting bycycle tires on a truck because they will cut through the snow. I say go with the stock tire size and try not to go any narrower. It only snows every now and then, Most winter driving is still on asphalt, unless you live on a long dirt road. I wouldn't worry so much about snow tires and just get an aggressive AT tire. Just my Humble Opinion.

Help me out here. We had a discussion on this forum within the last six months about the speed sensors for the speedometer and the argument was whether or not tire size and/or diff ratio changes effected the speedo accuracy.

I thought we concluded that diff ratios did change the speedo but tire sizes didn't.

Pardon the hazy memory. I haven't had a swig o' whiskey for some time now.
