Default Rear Differential Recall Information

Got this today via email from Chrysler on my 2011 RAM 1500. Sorry if it has been posted already. They are replacing rear diff covers and adding a drainback restrictor...

Chrysler has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in some 2011 model year Ram 1500 series trucks.

The problem is...

The rear axle pinion bearing on your truck (VIN: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx) may not receive adequate lubrication under certain driving conditions. This lack of lubrication condition could cause the pinion bearing to seize and cause a loss of vehicle control and/or a crash without warning.

What your dealer will do...

Chrysler will repair your vehicle free of charge (parts and labor). To do this, your dealer will install a pinion bearing fluid drain-back flow restrictor and a new axle cover with a revised fluid fill level access hole. The work will take about 1½ hours to complete. However, additional time may be necessary depending on service schedules.

Anyone had this work done yet? I got my notice in the mail yesterday and called the dealer today. He says the parts are on "restriction" and could take a while to arrive.

I called my dealer today and set up an appointment for this Friday so they obviously have the part.

They had to order the new cover, my dealer could only order 2 in a week. Part came in following week, dropped truck off, took about 3 hours for them to replace.

That ain't too bad, my buddy had a Tundra and they did a recall for the ring & pinion being too soft of a metal due to some faulty machining and when he got the notice the parts were on national backorder. They advised him NOT to drive the truck until they could make the repair. He cut down on his use when he could, but did use it some. Didn't have an issue. Good thing too, because they didn't call him for the repair for over 4 months...

Received my notice in the mail and had the truck at the dealer within 48 hours. Took 1.5 hours to replace and they even washed my truck. Very painless!
