Default OEM Remote Start

New user and first post. I just bought a new '11 Ram Laramie 1500 this weekend after trading in my 2006 F-250 Powerstroke. Got tired of paying for diesel and not needing all that power.

New truck is loaded with just about every option except for remote start.

Anybody add the OEM remote start after the fact? From what I have read I can't do it myself without going to the dealer to have it programmed.

Looking forward to gleening lots of good info on my new truck.

You will probably get the best deal from a local dealer - check around.

The reason I say that, is that they include the computer work, and two key fobs, and usually also reprogram your original key fobs.

Plus, a dealer installed option is usually covered under new vehicle warranty.

p.s. It's an easy job for the dealer to do.

yea ... had it installed by dealer on both my wifes caravan and my 09 ram. they have to install it and then update the computer to read it off the bus, so it will require them one way or the other. I think it usually costs about 350-400 all said and done ... but peace of mind for an oem part that is covered by waruntee ... had a big name aftermarket start acting up in the van after 6 months so to me the extra cost was well worth it.

Side tracking a little bit, but I had the factory remote start and I replaced it with a 2 way. I got sick of needing to be within 100 ft to start the truck, and now I can reach near a mile. So if range is a factor for you, I would recommend aftermarket.

We were having issues with our oem remote start on our RAM, I mentioned it one time a while back when it was in for the mirror replacement, they asked for both fobs, I told them I just changed the batteries. Anyway, I asked my wife if they did anything, there is nothing on the paper work from that day just the mirror. I will have to ask if they did anything batteries are the same as I put in, I know this since they are a different brand. She also said the truck starts now as she drives into the parking lot the bus drops her off at and she parks far away to avoid damage. So them must have done something maybe they just reprogrammed them, I could have done that but I didn't feel it was my job at least not the first time.

Well, you should have bought a Ford and it would have been there! Just kidding... I would have made the dealer include it to seal the deal... another few bucks and they would have bit I am sure... Welcome aboard!

I'm having this done today. I had to special order the parts, then arrange for installation once they came in. I really didn't care so much about the remote start, but I only got one key with the truck (bought used) and I was quoted $250 for one programmed key whereas for around $430, I'll have 3 keys and remote start.

My wife's Ford Edge has an aftermarket alarm/remote start. We bough it used as well, and it's worked all the time we've had it. She loves it on cold mornings.

$430 is pretty steep to me. I installed a Viper remote start and alarm with 2 way pager remote for $190 on my F-250.

Guess I'll have to re-evaluate.

So did you have the dealer remove the factory remote start before hand? I'm gonna get rid of the factory system on my truck, I cant stand it. I had a Viper on my previous Ram and it was outstanding!
