mopar brake controller installation
so i called my local dealer to buy the brake controller and they said they couldnt get it. after I just found it on multiple sites. So i went ahead and ordered it from http://www.dodgechryslerparts.com/pr...oducts_id=2190
and it arrived today. upon reading the instructions it says I need a sales code and then another code from the dealerships service dept. upon further reading i see you need to hook a computer up to it and so on. So I'm taking it, I cannot install this to save some money? Anyone have any experience?

From what I have seen it should be plug and play but you need to have your dealer hook your truck to their computer so that you can read the brake controller through your evic screen. If you don't care about it showing up on your evic then just plug it in and forget about the trip to the dealer.
From what I have heard you can install it yourself and it will work but will not integrate with your DIC so you will not know what setting it is on etc... it will also set a soft code in your ECM for an extra canbus device (which is invisible to the end user).
So yes and no...
So yes and no...
I just took the one out of my 03 silverado when I bought my new 09 ram and just got the wiring harness from my local napa auto parts, plugged it in, and wired it up and that was it. Didn't go to the dealer for anything. Mine is an aftermarket one, so it may be a little different from the mopar one.
It is actually an awesome setup. The reality of modern day vehicles is that they have an integrated system. It is the same as plugging a new device into a computer... sometimes everything works just fine, sometimes only certain features work until you download the latest drivers...
