I have a 2012 Dodge 1500Ram HEMI Engine Knock at warm up only. Dealer is tells me it's a normal thing. He show me two that did the samething it's only on a cold start.

 

Ok. He's right. Most all engines make noise of some sort more so on cold start. My hemi makes less noise then the 6.2 in my corvette and less then the 6.0 in my previous corvette. My 4.6 in my 2010 Merc. is quieter then the hemi and 6.2 BUT you can hear the timing chain(I think) for a little bit, worse the colder it is. My 1998 318 Magnum was pretty quiet. (old caste iron block and heads)Now if you want to listen to noises,pull it up next to a wall hot or do a cold start and listen intently. You'll hear a lot going on. I also think what these engine blocks/heads are made of and thickness has some to do with noise transfer. (318 Magnum was quietest of the bunch)

 

Sounds like Hemi Tick. Some say that the never hear it, but every hemi I've heard does the same thing on cold startup.

 

My 5.7 is super quiet UNLESS I stop for about 20 minutes. When the hot engine sits, it had a horrid lifter tap. Takes a good 10 minutes of driving for it to work itself out.

When I was young we would say the lifter was pumped up. Though I have no idea what it really is.

 

Usually the oil filter causes this. Try a Pure 1,Mobil,factory etc. If it still does it you have a 'issue' I don't know what a Hemi 'tic' sounds like. Mine just sounds like a cold V8 and you can hear stuff. Noting unusual to me.

 

How come every time someone says they have an engine KNOCK, people says it's the Hemi TICK?

 

Because most folks don't have a clue what a KNOCK actually sounds like. And if the engine is actually knocking, it usually tosses a part through the pan in a short period of time.

Really? I guess I just assumed that when people heard a TICKING noise, they would call it a tick, and when they heard a KNOCKING noise they would call it a KNOCK.

I bet you $20 bucks if the OP took a video it would be a knock.

 

I'd take that bet, because engines do not just knock when they are cold. If it is knocking, its doing it full time. Knock is caused by failing parts that are out of spec - worn rod bearings, loose rod bolts or bad wrist pins. A cold noise is not a knock - it is lifter noise, or sometimes just detonation. I'm sure you've got 20+ years of engine building to back up your thoughts, so lets hear them
