a little confused on rear axle
my wife was talkin to a fellow who had bought a truck identicle to mine, 2012 2500 w/hemi 4x4. they were talkin fifth wheels and he had stated he liked this ceder creek that was on the lot, she asked him if he wanted to look at it and he did . when he looked at the weight rating of 8500 empty he told her its to big he cant pull it because he has the 373 rear end....another dealer gave him this info and has him thinking about trading up to a 3500.

Seems somewhat correct. With the 3500 you go diesel and the tow rating jumps.

Be aware that the numbers on that web site are for 2009 and earlier models. Dodge changed tow ratings to a new system for 2010 and beyond. Tow ratings jumped quite a bit for 1500s with no actual vehicle changes.
A 2500 seems likely to be able to tow around 12-13K unless it is some strange combination that happens to limit things (like a V6 and 3.21 does for a 1500). Obviously they need to look up the specifics for that particular vehicle to know, but something doesn't seem right about a limit that low.
