Default Oil Change Message Help

I have a 2012 Ram 1500 4.7L with 3400 miles. I have changed the oil twice so far. Once in October of 2012 with 714 miles and on 5/10/13 with 2345 miles. Running Mobil1 and a k&n filter. I also have a k&n air filter. The oil change due message just came on. Does this message come on automatically based on engine hours or miles or does it sense the condition of the oil. I find it hard to believe I need an oil change after 4 months and 1100 miles. I was planning on doing it in november and maintaining 6 month intervals.

Thanks for the link. So if I'm reading this correctly the computer thinks I've never changed the oil. So I can reset the message and continue with my 6 month oil changes.

That's what I do. I do my oil changes when I the oil looms like it n3eds to be. Normally around 4500 mi. I don't own a ram 1500 (I have a dakota so It might be different ) I pump the gas 3 times well the key is 1 click before turning on then turn the truck on and off. But I don't know if that will work for you .
