Default newbie to tire scene. need help asap

i just bought a used 2009 1500 SLT that came with 20" wheels.
it is the first vehicle i have had or even driven in that had that size wheels. the vehicle seems to sit quite high.im not sure if it is because of the bigger wheels or if dodge makes theior truck bigger than i remember the tires that are on it are goodyear wrangler dura-trac 285/60's. i see that stock tires could have been 245, 265 or 275's. is this 285/60 the proper tire for this truck? i'm not an off road guy. i just want good traction in winter and very infrequent use on dirt 2 tracks going hunting. a small utility trailer for hauling quads would be the only thing i would pull.
any help would be great.

So are you wanting to replace the tires? If 285 is not listed as the stock tire (as printed on the door sticker), then no, these are not the OEM tires. As far as "proper tire for the truck", if there are no fitment issues (rubbing on turns, etc) then they should be fine.

i dont want to replace them, just wasnt sure if a modification had to be made by the previous owner to get them to fit.
no rubbing issues. they just seem overkill for my type of driving. the back end seems a little jumpy when i hit small bumps in the road. i wasnt sure if it was because of the tire size, inflation or type of tire(more off road)

thanks for the reply

If the back end seems jumpy, you should look at your suspension ( shocks ) instead of the tire size.

Does it happen at certain speed? You can play with tire pressure up to about 40psi and see if there will any difference.
There's a guy here experience some sideways bouncing, he put a drop kit on that included new (rear) springs and seems somehow help.
But I think too its the shock, check Bilstein or Monroe.
Procomp and Skyjacker shocks are good brands too.

I wouldn't worry about it, most come with the 275s, so a 10mm difference in width won't be enough to affect anything. As stated you can change the tire pressure to see if that helps.
