I have a 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 with the Lifetime warranty. The alternator is going bad. Only putting out 80 amps at idle. It works fine during driving. Also two days ago the A/C system leaked all the freon out. I recharged it with half a full charge and it was gone within 24 hours.

Now I'm doubtful abbout the alternator being covered. However since the A/C system is "internally lubricated". Will the lifetime warranty cover these items?

Hoping a Dodge tech can chime in.

Your truck never had a "Lifetime Warranty" It had a "Lifetime POWERTRAIN Warranty". A BIG difference. So in short, no, your alternator or A/C Compressor is not covered at this point nor is anything that is not directly a part of the Engine, Transmission or drivetrain.

Also, while irrelevant to the situation you are dealing with now, one of the requirements of maintaining the Lifetime Powertrain Warranty on your 2009 Ram is having the truck inspected by a Dodge dealer within 60 days of the 5 year anniversary of your truck. If you failed to do this you no longer have the Lifetime Powertrain Warranty. I am surprised at how many people forget all about this requirement. Below is the copy and paste from the actual 2009 manual:


G. Inspections
In order to maintain the Lifetime Powertrain Limited
Warranty, the person or entity covered by this Powertrain
Limited Warranty must have a powertrain inspection
performed by an authorized Chrysler, Dodge, or
Jeep dealer once every 5 years. This inspection will be
performed at no charge. The inspection must be made
within sixty (60) days of each 5 year anniversary of the
in-service date of the vehicle. You must have the
inspection performed to continue this coverage.
For your convenience, powertrain inspection logs
have been provided. You should use these logs to
keep track of each 5 year powertrain inspection interval.

 

Seems like it would have been hard to forget, I think they sent out 2-3 reminders to bring the truck in for the free inspection.

 

You would think. But as popular as these trucks are it's a question i frequently ask when i meet someone who has one. Most of them have no idea. It's an expensive oversight!

 

Well I was there last in May 2011. I asked and they said it was inspected and it would count. If I was mislead and they want to cancel it. No problem. I own the truck out right and will dump it for the $20K and buy the Mustang GT I want anyways. The only thing keeping me in it was the warranty.

 

Never received that notice at all. Just a recall for the rear axle.

 

It must be a top model in exceptional condition with very low miles if someone is offering you $20k. I might be tempted just to take it and run and figure out later what I was going to do with it.

I recently sold my 1 year old GMC with 4k miles for $24k.

 

Model is in my info. 78K in excellent condition. I'm in South, FL. My buddy traded his 09 with body damage in last year for $20K. Only premium 93 fuel and 3k mile oil changes its whole life.

 

You are aware that these engines (unless you swapped the cam and/or are using certain engine tunes) are optimized for and call for 89 Octane and running anything higher will do absolutely nothing right?. Higher Octane fuel does not offer more power or MPG's nor does it burn cleaner or increase engine life. You are literally throwing money away.
