Default Question About aftermarket headers.

What is it about the design of an aftermarket header that causes it to have that really loud crackle? I use to have a ford probe gt, i bought hearders, high flow cat, and cat back exhaust. I put them all on at the same time, holy crap did that add some snap, but it also added a horrible sound, as if i were driving around with a giant chain saw strapt to my car! I ended up putting my stock header and cat back on cuz it wasnt worth sacrificing the nice sound for a small to medium hp gain. That is why i am sceptical about buying a header for my neon, does anyone know of a header for an 01 neon that doesnt create this awful sound?

less restictions and sound supressers to bounce off of your hearing more of the engine that way.

i think it is most likely because of the highflow cat you had. it lets a lot more sound go through that usually is muffled by it and hence the ****ty sound. getting a header should be no prob with sound, but i would keep the stock cat

what header would you recomend? i was considering getting the pacesetter catback, mostly because i dont plan on keeping the car forever and if it rusts off 5 years from now it wont be my problem anymore, but which header is the best for fitment, sound, hp gain ect?

I have the tasudo header (OBX) it has a little noise to it, i also have a magnaflow cat, 2.5' piping and a magnaflow muffler. It sounds great!!! For the header noise you can put header wrap on and it will help some. I have never noticed and bad noise from my header.

I belive the pacesetter does.... You wont really see any differance unless you lose the stock cat (DO NOT JUST USE A DOWN PIPE... they sound like crap) or get long tube headers!

Nope no bolt on cat, by federal law it has to be welded into the system. what you can do is buy a header with a down pipe from modern perfomance and then also get a cat from them. take the cat and down tube to a muffler shop and have them put the cat in the down tube. then it would be bolt on and should not cost to much!

Hey good thinking! i never thought of that. I do graphic design for a bifold door company so there are plenty of people here that could weld it up for me, or i could do it myself, i didnt go to 3 years of autobody to not use the knowledge once and a while. Thanks!
