Ok so i tried puting a short shifter in the other day and it at first worked fine and dandy but on the highway the bottom linkage popped out so i lost all my gears and had to pull on the side of the highway and take the center console out and reattach them... after that when i was just cruising in 3rd or 5th gear... NO OTHER GEAR just those two... the shifter would pop itself out of either gear into neutral....i thought it was just the short shifter so i put the stock one in and tried it out... still popping out of 3rd and 5th gear, randomly.... so i took a look at the bushing and linkage under the hood and it looks like that bushing is a bit worn.... do you guys think that could be the problem? or is it something else? any help would be much appreciated thanks guys....

 

So the transmission isnt coming out of gear just the gear shifter is popping out of place? That is the wierdest thing I've ever heard...i'll have to think about that one...i'll keep you posted. I dont see how worn bushings would actually push it out of place, especially since it didnt do it before you installed the STS...but new bushings are like $25 so it wouldnt hurt to replace them anyways...

Its also possible your linkage is damaged somehow since it came off while cruising...Oh does it do it all the time now, or is it just a random occurence? Any speed or gear seem to do it more than any other?

 

well it doesnt matter now... b/c i lost 4th and 5th gear.....while i was on the highway so im pretty much screwed im guessing worst part is is that it happend on a sunday.... so i wont know whats wrong with it till tomorrow or tuesday at the latest.... but i think its something internal... b/c i could put the shifter where 5th and 4th gear usually is.... but its like being in neutral.... so no gear... but it looks like it was shifting into them.....so im pretty pissed off...... no im very pissed off and a bit sad... *sigh* oh btw this is for everyone.... DONT BUY A SHORT SHIFTER FOR YOUR NEON FROM K2 Motors....... thats the one i got and tried to install.... and thats the one that messed up my tranny........dont buy it........ but either way im prolly looking at a few hundred $ for repairs or a junkyard tranny or something.... who knows...

 

Check the two bushings on the tranny and two by the shifter and make sure they're tight. Then if you haven't done this already I would suggest putting your stock shifter back in to see if maybe something on the short throw shifter is messed up. It could be just the shifter. When I put my mopar STS on I also installed booger bushings and I didn't get one of the bushings on well enough and it made it hard to shift into 3rd. I checked it again and fixed the problem, my car shifts like a dream.

 

well you got lucky i took it off already and it was still messed up and it just got worse and worse and now its sitting at a tranny shop........ thanks though.... im not a happy camper right now.... [sm=boohoo.gif]
