I will warn you with McAfee however, that they're AV software is very bloated and often can be a PITA as much as a help. I'm not going to bash them, simply pass along the info I know to you.
Easiest way to fix your problem is to not use McAfee. McAfee comes with Comcast internet with the whole lifetime subscription deal. Yet when you try to scan you incoming mail for viruses it don't work with Comcast's webmail.
SOunds like you might have a problem with your browser period. If you are using IE 6.0 or higher then you might have a big problem. I have 3 computers and all on all of them IE crapped out on me and I had to switch to Firefox. I had the same problem as you trying to download pretty mcuh any program. Everything is ok with that now.
Now for McAfee. It is a PITA!!! I will will use a free scan tool from microsfot or anyone, and if I have a big problem, I will download McAfee, run the scan, then delete it asap. The program slows your computer down way to much.

Software can run for years without being refreshed, but over time updates, temp files, and just crap in general builds up and causes the operating system to run slower. Defragmenting, spyware scans, dumping your temp files, and just keeping your system in good order can alleviate this issue, but it doesnt always prevent it.

no famous computer professional with years of experience
would ever seriously propose
just dumping your anti-virus software
...or would he?

not relying on AV
and using a program like Sandboxie or Greenborder
that isolates any of your prefered internet browsers
is a valid argument
but I am still going to keep using AVG for awhile
with occasional visits to Housecall and EWIDO for free online scans
