This interval (5000 miles) is recommended by "the car guys" and many others. I think the 3000 miles/3 months won't hurt, but really doesn't help (except the dealer).
So, there's another opinion!
I pretty much stick to 3000 miles with conventional or 5000 miles with synthetic myself.
I bought the 2010 Journey for my mother. Traded in her '07 Caravan with 14,000 miles on it and just paid the difference, which was only about $3700. The Caravan was bought when my step dad had a stroke and needed a vehicle with wheel chair access. When he passed away, she thought the mini van too large for her needs and she was never comfortable driving it. The only reason the Caravan had 14,000 miles on it in three years is because we took a trip from Florida to NY and back for a service for my step dad in the town where he retired as police chief, otherwise, I doubt it would have had much over 8 or 9,000 miles on it.
Because she has some health issues, the Journey averages about 3500 miles a year and I'm the one who mostly drives it (I'll usually go over and drive her to medical appts,, shopping, etc. about once a week). Bought it around Christmas of 2009 and I believe it's only got about 4300 miles on it right now.
The dealer includes free 3000 mile oil changes or three years (whichever comes first) and as such, only does them about once a year with conventional oil. When the thing is three years old, I'll take over with a 100% full synthetic, although I'll probably stick to a yearly schedule. I ain't too keen on leaving oil in for much over a year, which dictates infrequent use with short trips, the one thing that is hardest on oil...

For conventional oil, I am old school and stick with 3-4k miles oil change interval. It only cost you a little more over the period of car ownership, but it will pay off if you keep the car long enuff or give it to a friend/relative.
my 09 tells me when it's time to change the oil...and it is usually right around the 3 month or 3k mark. It just went off the other day and I'm still 400 miles from 3000 and at about 2-1/2 months since the last change. They say this oil change interval is based of your driving habits so it could sometimes be more or sometimes less than 3 mo./3k miles. My Dak I change at 5 months/5 k but I'm running mobile 1 synthetic with the extended wear filter.
